An absolute sublime masterpiece. In excellent condition with the gilding being fully returned to its original rich opulence.
Malachite has been used throughout history to decorate palaces around the world. In Russia you will find the Malachite Room in the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, which was the former residence of the Russian Tsars. The name Malachite is believed to come from the Greek word “molochitus”, referring to the mallow leaf which is similar in colour. Malachite has been used by humans since antiquity and was believed to protect one from evil. In Ancient Egypt, the colour green was highly symbolic, representing new life and fertility. Ancient Egyptians referred to the eternal paradise they believed awaited them in the afterlife as the “Field of Malachite”. In Ancient Greece and Rome, Malachite was carved into amulets, jewellery, and statuary. Ancient Romans referred to Malachite as the "peacock stone", associated with the Queen of the Gods, Juno.
A truly majestic & palatial masterpiece.
