Early Paul Kingma Stone Mosaic Coffee Table, Dutch Design and Art, 1963
About the Item
Impressive concrete coffee table on a black metal base with mosaic inlay by the Dutch sculptor Paul Kingma. Made in 1963 in the Netherlands.
Like all coffee tables made by Paul Kingma, this one is hand made with materials he carefully collected. The tables were made in his atelier and always commission based. The table looks sober but also natural and pleasant. The colors are calming and still modern looking today. This table is the work of an artist. Its composition is originated from a process only an sculptor like Kingma could manage. In our opinion this table should be considered a piece of art and an important object in Ducth mid-century design.
It is a very early example of a coffee table by the Paul Kingma. The early examples are from the 60s, often square shaped and made of organic mosaic stones. Another detail for determine his early work is his typical hand signature in the concrete. This table is probably one of the first tables he ever made and is from before he started making them on a larger scale. A very rare and highly collectible item by one of the most famous sculptors from the Dutch mid-century.
Paul Kingman, born in 1931, was a Dutch Sculptor and mosaic artist. In his early years he studied art in Arnhem and became a teacher at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In his career he made several sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities. Next to his sculptures, he also made mosaic tables. It were these tables he became most famous for. All of his coffee tables he hand made with materials he gathered during his travels around the world, are now being considered as highly collectable. He made these tables from the 1960s to the 1980s and died in 2013 at the age of 81.
