Large Mid 19th Century Canned Juma or Elmwood Kang Daybed or Opium Table

About the Item

An exceptionally large Chinese Kang bed or daybed that was made in Ju Mu or elmwood with a central woven rattan top panel. The wood shows a beautiful dark grain with remnants of cracked black paint. The piece has a rich and warm honey color with great patina and deep gloss. A Kang bed primarily served as a bed placed in the living quarters where many Chinese smoked their opium pipe, especially in Southern China. Therefore this type of bed is also known as an opium bed or opium table. Typical for a Kang bed is the heavy inward bend legs. This bed has a bamboo inlaid top. The table has been used for the last few decades as a large coffee table. To make the table suitable as a coffee table, the woven bamboo was glued to a sheet of plywood. The bend stretchers were left as is and are still visible underneath the table. It is well constructed and ready for use.
