Walnut Coffee Table w/ Travertine Top Attributed to T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings, 1950

About the Item

Introducing an extraordinary coffee table attributed to the late great T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. Constructed from a frame of solid walnut (stained mahogany) with gorgeous woodgrains throughout and featuring a double-ringed circular base, rounded cantilever feet and intricate joinery this table is truly unlike anything we've ever seen. At the center is a solid slab of polished travertine, sitting raised above the wood line and replete with exquisite swirls and colors. English born T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings is perhaps one of the most influential and noteworthy designers working in the U.S. during the mid-century period. By the 1930s and 1940s he was arguably the most important decorator in America. After opening a shop on New York's Madison Avenue in 1936, Robsjohn-Gibbings proceeded to design houses from coast to coast for such scions as tobacco heiress Doris Duke, publisher Alfred A. Knopf and socialite Thelma Chrysler Foy. The design work of T. H. Robsjohn Gibbings is hallmarked as a modern mixture of the classical elements of Ancient Grecian design and Art Deco design. It often features mosaic floor reproductions, sculptural fragments, and sparse furnishings all combining to achieve his trademark brand of modern historicism which are on full display in every aspect of this elegantly designed and crafted coffee table. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian Modern design he worked as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1943 to 1956. With it's exceptional use of natural materials, intricate shaping and classical design elements this table is ideal for both collectors and designers alike searching for the perfect centerpiece coffee table that can tie and entire room together. Perfect in both office or home spaces this alluring table can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Art Deco. With no other table like it currently for sale in North America when it's gone, it's gone forever. Make it yours today. ---Dimensions--- Width: 36 in / 91.44 cm Depth: 36 in / 91.44 cm Height: 16 in / 40.64 cm Save for a few minor repairs this fascinating table is in original, vintage condition. The solid walnut composition is in remarkably good shape showing only one minor crack repair (as seen in the detail photos provided) as well as some surface scratches (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided). With that said there are no gouges, stains or other damage present whatsoever and variegated walnut woodgrains are absolutely stunning in natural light. The solid (HEAVY) polished travertine top is in superb original condition showing no chips, cracks or scratches whatsoever. This elegant coffee table is functional, structurally sound and ready for a literal lifetime more of use. Please view all photos for details on this table's current condition.
