Important Antique American Herter Brothers End or Center Table Marked w. Label

About the Item

Important & unique table with the Herter Brothers, New York paper label. When we purchased this antique ebonized table in the Renaissance Style we thought that we had bought a rare table. It was only after we searched the internet that we realized this would probably be the rarest find of our lives. The chance of finding an original Herter Brothers piece of furniture in the USA is very small, finding a marked one in the Netherlands is like a (minor) miracle and it did not stop there. It was only after reading the following 2 sentences on the internet that we knew we had actually found an important American antique: "Several pieces of Herter Brothers furniture remain in the White House including a center table and a slipper chair. This center table bears the remains of the only known Herter Brothers paper label; generally the firm stamped their furniture, a common practice in the 19th century." Apart from the above mentioned, we also found some marked Herter Brothers pieces in the MoMa in New York and pictures of some awesome Herter Brothers pieces that are in private collections. Here on 1stdibs we can only find pieces that are 'attributed' to Herter Brothers and that too is how we discovered how difficult it is to find original and marked pieces by these world class furniture makers. From a business point of view we are not certain if we are doing the right thing by selling it through here and not via one of the major auction houses, but we can live with that. We have been blessed with finding many rare antiques in our lives and we never had any regrets about what we did not purchase or what we may have sold for 'too little'. The multiple carvings in this table are exceptional and for a piece of furniture with this many details/decorations, we find it to have an extremely serene look and feel. This too is what sets the best makers apart from the good ones. In this case it comes down to proportions, the overal balance and the coloring that makes this table such a masterpiece and an absolute joy to own and to look at. This unique antique also holds a clue that could help the more knowledgable Herter collector / specialist reveal some of its provenance. There is a hand carved monogram just on the left of one of the eight carved figures and that monogram (SV) is best seen in images 7 and 11. This could be the monogram of the master carver who handcarved this work-of-art-table, but it could also be the monogram of this table's first owner. And with the value of Herter Brothers pieces of furniture being considerable when they were new as well, this could very well be a very well known person within the American or New York society. This table stands as strong and stabile as the day it was hand-crafted and apart from some small pieces of wood missing in the corners (please read our 'condition report' on the right of this item description) and some minor damages to some of the noses of the eight male sculptures, this table is in very good condition. With this free standing table being exceptionally carved all around it is a work of art in its own right which does not even need a purpose and we are certain you yourself too can think of many places/spaces where this would look amazing. And if it were to go to an American museum that could be even better, for it would help keep alive the Herter Brothers history and maybe inspire new generations to strive for excellence as well. Our price for this remarkable table includes perfect packing (in a custom made and padded crate) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth: 30 x 28 x 22 inches. Width x depth of the flat part of the table top: 24 x 18 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for the best craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

Replacements made: We had the table top cleaned and re-blackened and some carvings needed re-glueing, because the glue had dried up. We also had some of the brass nails in the brass borders replaced (with vintage ones), because they were no longer there. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. This table stands truly strong. Because the noses of all mask sculptures stick out from under the table top, most got minor damage. In 3 corners (between the masks) there are some small pieces of wood missing. In image number three it is complete.
