19th Century Louis XV Style Gilt Carved Writing Table Desk

About the Item

Opulent 19th century French writing table, desk, or bureau plat made in the grand Louis XV taste. The wood frame of this extraordinary table is veneered and carved with intricate floral, foliate, and acanthus motifs in a wonderfully patinated veneer of gilt and gesso. The surface has an amazing metallic quality and feel. The top of the desk has an embossed brown leather writing surface bordered by a thick gilt frame. The desk is fronted by two storage drawers with intricately carved fronts. The case is supported by elegant and subtle cabriole legs that taper towards the bottom. The overall design of the table is more of a transitional style than the typical Louis XV form but incredibly embellished with sinuous scrolling gilt designs on all sides. To view the piece in person is like staring at a fine French painting. From a palatial San Francisco, CA estate. Could also serve as a wonderful library table.
