French 19th Century Louis XV Style Flamed Mahogany and Ormolu Bureau Plat Desk
About the Item
A magnificent French 19th century Louis XV style flamed mahogany and ormolu Bureau plat desk. The desk is raised by handsome cabriole legs with exquisitely chased ormolu acanthus leaf sabots and ormolu chutes leading up to striking and intricately detailed corner mounts of beautiful maidens wearing feather headdresses. The elegant scalloped shaped frieze displays one drawer and two smaller faux drawers, each displaying a striking flamed mahogany background. The central drawer displays a finely chased pierced ormolu mount with lovely acanthus leaves, rinceaux shaped scrolls and a fine swaging floral garland pull framed within an ormolu Coeur de Rai border. The faux drawers at each side display beautiful and unique ormolu pulls with richly chased interlocking foliate designs and impressive swaging floral pulls. Each side is centered by a striking ormolu reserve of a finely detailed maiden with luxuriant scrolled foliate movements, an impressive palmette headdress and laurel branches flanked by flamed mahogany recessed panels framed within Coeur de Rai ormolu bands. The back is decorated in the same manner as the front with three elegant faux drawers. Above is the original fitted leather writing surface with a fine gold tooled border. All original gilt throughout.
