About the Item

Unique dining table and four chairs in smoked perspex with chrome and orange perspex fittings. Very modern design, the table has a glass top and the chairs originally had velvet cushions. Replacement cushions upon request. This dining set previously wrongly attributed to Michel Ducaroy, i recently found documentation which authenticates the original creator as Peter Banks of Banks Heeley Plastics. This dining set is a piece of English history and innovation. Peter Banks and his partner David Heeley, started Banks Heeley Plastics in 1967. They had both studied interior design at Leicester College of Art. Initially they designed a range of aluminium furniture, but quickly moved onto working with ICI and producing furniture in Perspex. They were pioneers of Perspex fabrication and designed and produced all their own bending machinery. In the early 1970s David left the business and Peter Banks went on to lead the company to award winning success. He won for two years running in the early 70s ‘Show Piece of the Year Award’ first for a Perspex stereo trolley and then for a Perspex and marble dining table. He was chairman of The Furniture Industry Research Association for a number or years, and also a visiting lecturer in Furniture Design at The Royal College of Art in the 80s. Peter was held in extremely high regard within the furniture industry and known for being a trailblazer of contemporary furniture design, often being told that he was ahead of his time. His stunning designs have certainly stood the test of time. He exhibited extensively - many times in London at the London Furniture Show, then Birmingham when the NEC opened - The Ideal Home Exhibition - and then internationally in New York, Montreal, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Cologne, Milan, Paris ...... the list goes on
