Giuseppe Scapinelli: Dining Table in Mahogany & Back-Painted Glass, Italy 1950's

About the Item

Giuseppe Scapinelli (1891 - 1982) An imposing and elegant dining table or writing table by Italian-Brazilian designer Giuseppe Scapinelli, in mahogany with a fully opaque, back-painted glass top and brass sabots. The rectangular top, which is straight at its length and narrows to two subtle obtuse angles at its width, is silvered on the underside and cannot be seen through. It’s supported by a sensually carved wood frame that curves downwards along two sides and tapers at its ends. The table’s legs are bullet-shaped and elongated, joined by a sculptural arched crossbar with gracefully carved and rounded edges. Of special note are the bellied curve of the table’s frame and the pleasurable avoidance of hard lines. The feet culminate in turned-out brass sabots. The beautifully polished mahogany’s grain is strong and lustrous throughout, enhancing the overall vigor of this highly dynamic and handsome work. Can be used as a desk, conference table, or dining table. Italy/ Brazil, 1950’s.
