Karl Springer parchment dining table, USA/Germany, 1970s

About the Item

This parchment table attributed to Karl Springer, is monolithic with grand proportions, seating up to 12. A designer of luxury furniture and objects, Springer (born Berlin, 1931) cut his cloth as a bookbinder and window dresser before emigrating to New York in 1957. There, he began applying his skills to the creation of jewellery boxes, tables and desk accessories, which he wrapped in animal skins. Drawing inspiration from the designers Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann and Jean-Michael Frank, as well as French Art Deco, Springer based this design on classical, European form. It is an alluring example of Springer’s education and work, utilising parchment an expansive scale. The covering appears like vellum tiles, each with a unique texture. The table has recently been restored and refinished in a semi matte lacquer. Some of the seams remain opened slightly, and some losses and surface marks remain.
