Modernist Dutch Art Deco occasional table attributed to Jan Brunott, 1920s

About the Item

A Dutch Art Deco side table, typically Haagse School (The Hague School), ca. 1925. The design is very modernist. Based on similar designs and the opinion of an expert in the field, the table has been attributed to Jan Brunott (1889-1951). This table will fit in very well with other pieces in the same style and is ideal as side or coffee table. The piece is made of oak and has black lacquered decorative elements that give it its modernist appearance. In good condition with small signs of wear and patina. Pictures were taken in different kinds of natural light and sunlight, in order to provide an accurate impression of how it looks in a room. In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as Haagse School. More cubist and functional than the imaginative Amsterdam School style, but with some similarities as well. After the First World War, young designers such as Henk Wouda, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern interior design. For inspiration they chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements in furniture design of that time. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its straight and cubist shapes.
