Small, Rare 17th Century English Oak Occasional Table

About the Item

A small, rare and highly attractive late 17th century English oak occasional table with fretted apron. A rare survivor, this table is an unusually small side table with several very interesting features. Perhaps most striking is the fretwork form apron to the frieze but the cross stretcher of shaped outline is also extremely attractive. The table retains the original drop handles and the turned legs, tapering unusually from thinnest at the top to widest at the base, have something of the look of a fine telescope to them. The piece terminates in original bun feet with plinths, extremely rare as most of the feet from this age of furniture were worn away and replaced. The table top is made of two planks and retains an excellent colour and patination. Tables of this size are always very desirable, especially when they are as decorative as the present example. This piece would almost certainly have been produced as a bespoke commission as it is so unusual and today it would be a fine decorative accent in the right room. A very interesting piece of furniture that surely has a story to tell.

The table has a single drawer at both ends with the original handles and stands on finely shaped cabriole legs with restrained hoof form feet. The combination of a relatively simple overall form and rococo detailing works very well indeed and the table is a charming and interesting piece of provincial French furniture...
