English Mid-19th Century Sofa Table Stamped by London Maker Edwards and Roberts
About the Item
English mid 19th century rosewood sofa table with brass overlay accents to turnings and drawer frieze, original brass shell shaped handles. This table is stamped by the maker Edwards and Roberts. Edwards and Roberts were fine cabinetmakers and retailers in London from 1845 to 1899, noted for their superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. This table uses fine timber and the brass accents add additional interest. This sofa table can be used with none, one or both leaves elevated, the leaf supports are finely finished and shaped so they become a graceful addition to the table's aspect.. Of course it can free stand in the middle of a room as it is finished on all sides. One side has a single working drawer and two faux drawers; the other long side has three faux drawers; both sides have a cast brass lower edge, which again is a visually important nicety. The turned pedestal ends and the central stretcher have brass overlays in the turnings. The concave outswept legs end in cast brass paw feet; when fully opened the table is 56 1/2" wide, 46 1/2" wide with one leaf up and 36 1/2" wide with neither leaf up. Circa 1850.
