Period Baroque Painted and Gilt Italian Table From the Estate of Cynthia Phipps

About the Item

This table crafted in carved painted and gilded wood was made in Italy, circa 1700. The style is fully Baroque and at one point may have had a specimen marble top. The present top is from circa 1880-1900 (see last two photos) and is most likely French. The tables painted surfaces and gilding are original and the top was made to accommodate the color scheme and overall decorative elements creating a unified whole unto itself. The table is designed as a series of enclosed cartouches formed by foliate and line borders centered on scallop shells, all gilded and set up from the marbled surface of the paintwork. The legs are centered by a stretcher attached to the legs in c shaped ends also decorated with gilded bosses (for structural details and to asses age please see image 13 showing the aging and discoloration, pegging and shrinkage) A descendant of Henry Phipps, business partner with Andrew Carnegie in his steel conglomerate and its second-largest shareholder who later moved on to real estate and philanthropy creating vast personal wealth yet considering his fellow men and helping to institute social change, Cynthia Phipps was half-sister to Lilly Pulitzer and is also related to the Churchills of England. Known for a passion for racing herself and continuing the tradition of philanthropy she spent her life living well, caring for others, helping animals through charity and personally heading charity organizations which she generously endowed.
