Italian Baroque Style Carved, Painted and Gilded Wood Figure of a Griffon

About the Item

This large 18th century figure of a dramatic and animated Griffon was made in Italy in the mid-18th century. Carved in great detail then gessoed, painted and gilded the figure stands with one claw raised while two others grip balls. The base attached now to the figure is from the 1920s and indicates that once this figure was part of a much larger carving or possibly decorative panel or overdoor. The base is painted to resemble marble and stabilizes the figure in its advancing pose. The figure has some worming, shrinkage separation in the glue blocked area and a repaired break to the tail but is in fine shape for its age and size as well as a wonderful old surface and the water gilding to the beak, fur on the legs and around the tail is bright and in good shape.
