About the Item

19th century English mahogany tilt-top end table is an ingenious invention that most agree originated with the English but who knows for sure? This example, rendered from what was then plentiful sources of mahogany from the Americas. The solid plank top has been subtly dished out leaving a rim around the perimeter accented with four indented scrolls. The top is attached to the turned pedestal shaft via a large dowel set through a top plate fitted with a spring latch system. The latch can be opened to allow the top to tilt vertically, allowing one to tuck the table against the wall where it can Stand ready until needed.
