Art Nouveau Fruitwood Bat Plaque by Gabriel Viardot
About the Item
A celebrated Parisian cabinetmaker and wood sculptor, Viardot enjoyed both critical and commercial success. Among his distinctions are a silver medal awarded at Paris’ Exposition Universelle in 1878; a gold medal in 1884 from the Salon International in Antwerp; and gold medals awarded at the Expositions Universelle in Paris, 1889 and 1900. He was honored in 1885 by being made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. Born into a family of carpenters, his first factory and store, Viardot Freres et Cie, was located in the faubourg Saint-Antoine on rue Rambuteau in the heart of Paris. By 1860, he opened his own workshop, G. Viardot, on rue Grand-Chantier. Viardot’s designs, inspired from Chinese and Japanese mythology and furniture styles, held mass appeal in the French and British markets. His furnishings typically featured dragons and other fantastic creatures. Many Viardot pieces are so convincingly rendered that they might be mistaken for Classical Chinese. By the last quarter of the century, Viardot employed some 100 people, and in 1890, the master created G. Viardot et Cie with his two children who took control of the studio upon Viardot’s death in 1906.
