Original Kellogg & Comstock Hand-Colored Lithograph 'Shepherdess of the Alps'

About the Item

Kellogg & Comstock SHEPHERDESS OF THE ALPS original Kellogg & Comstock hand-colored lithograph, Published by D. Needham (American, 1808 - 1888). Circa. 1848-1850. image: 12 in x 8 1/2 in; 30.48 cm x 21.59 cm. overall: 15 in x 11 in; 38 cm x 28 cm. Strong and clear impression, overall very good condition, paper has a light oxidation and restored small tear middle left side Framed, no glazing This hand colored print is of a young girl and two goats standing near a stream in a forested area. The girl is wearing a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves and long stockings. She is feeding a goat with flowers and grass from her apron. The original "Shepherdess of the Alps" appears to have been a play by Marmontel, which enjoyed great popularity in France, England, and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The play inspired numberous paintings and prints. See Paul Grigaut,"Marmontel's Shepherdess of the Alps in Eighteenth Century Art," Art Quarterly (1949). The subject appears quite frequently in schoolgirl art and embroidery from about 1800-1820. Examples are in the collections of Historic Deerfield, Old Sturbridge Village, Connecticut Historical Society and Smithsonian National Museum of American History. So far no version that exactly corresponds to the Kellogg prints has been found. (Finlay 1/23/2006).

  • 2 Antique Framed Silhouette Lithograph Prints Brown Kellogg Forsyth Macomb
    Located in Dayton, OH
"Two antique lithograph silhouettes of John Forsyth and Alexander Macomb taken from life by William Henry Brown and produced by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg. William Henry Brown and his wife, Emmaline, left Philadelphia around 1859 and settled in a small railraod community of Saxton near Altoona, PA. He had gone there to work on the railroad, since photography had put him out of work. By 1865 he had moved to Erie, PA and was married to Margaret Horrell. They had two sons. She died shortly thereafter and he moved to Wilcox near Kane, PA. Later he lived with a niece in Georgia then married a third time to Sarah Conrad. After her death he returned to South Carolina. Connecticut Historical Society still has the 6 foot silhouette of the ""Dewitt Clinton"" locomotive he had done in 1831. They also have 14 prints he gave them in 1853 of silhouettes that are not part of the Portrait Gallery. A traveling artist, William Brown was a portrait painter and silhouettist, whose subjects were distinguished persons, especially in Philadelphia, New England, and Charleston. Brown was especially noted for a series titled ""Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans"", published in 1846 as a book of lithographs from his full-length silhouettes. Also included were biographies of the subjects. He was born in Charleston but spent more time in Philadelphia than in the South. He trained as an engineer but in the early 1830s, devoted himself increasingly to art. He first worked in New England and then went South, spending much time in Charleston in the 1840s and early 1850. In 1842, he was in Natchez, and he was also in St. Louis and New Orleans. However, by the late 1850s demand for his work had lessened, and he returned to being an engineer, first in Philadelphia and then in Charleston where he died in 1883. John Forsyth Sr. (October 22, 1780 – October 21, 1841) was a 19th-century American politician from Georgia. He represented the state in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and also served as the 33rd Governor of Georgia. As a supporter of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, Forsyth was appointed secretary of state by Jackson in 1834, and continued in that role until 1841 during the presidency of Martin Van Buren...

  • Sumptuous Large Original William Foster Still Life Painting of a Banquet Table
    By William Frederick Foster
    Located in Tustin, CA
Sumptuous, very large, original oil on canvas board, still life painting depicting a banquet table. This painting is a virtuoso display of how artist William Frederick Foster (1883-1953) captures texture in paint. You can see this in the mouth watering fruit, crustacea and other samplings laid upon the table as well as the masterfully painted reflective surfaces of the copper tea pot, wine bottle and the gathered table cloth. Painting is framed in the original wood frame. Painting framed measures 34.5” high x 46” wide x 1.5” deep. Painting unframed measures 30.5” high x 42.5” wide. William Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1883. He became a noted figure painter and illustrator, living the last twenty-one years of his career in Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck. His early ambition was to be a violinist, but he was re-focused on fine art when he saw a painting by Albert Ceck Wenzell. In 1902, he went to New York City where he painted scenery for theaters, auditoriums, and large department stores. He also studied at the New York School with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase, and from 1903 to 1931, he worked as an illustrator and with a brief teaching stint in 1919 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1903, he sold his first illustration, a depiction of high society, to Life magazine, and the style was very similar to Wenzell. From that time, he worked for most of the major magazines including Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Monthly. In 1926, he won the National Academy of Design's Thomas B. Clarke Prize for the best figure composition painted in the United States by a non-academician. The following year, he was voted an Associate Member based on his recognition for a figure work titled The Girl in Brown. During World War I, he operated his own ambulance in France as a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps and also received mention as a camoufleur artist. Returning to the U.S., he resumed his illustration work and moved to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute. Foster moved to Los Angeles in 1932 and devoted his energy to painting, exhibiting and teaching. He taught at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and gave private classes in his studio. He also worked on a mural project at the Hearst estate...
