This 19th century oil painting, framed in a rectangular giltwood molded and carved frame, depicts two reclining spaniels in an interior. Resting in front of the fireplace, both dogs seem to be enjoying the warmth of the cooking pot after a tiring hunt. A large terracotta plate draws the eye to the window in the background, while a red drapery closes the scene in the foreground. Signed by British artist Edward Armfield (1817-1896), this painting reveals the growing love for domestic animals throughout the 19th century, exhibited in the increasingly popular dog shows.
