Colonial Baroque Gold Altarpiece, Painting Virgin of Candelaria

About the Item

One of a Kind Colonial Baroque altarpiece where the Virgin of Candelaria is represented, made in the 18th century in Cuzco (Peru). This magnificent piece has two different parts of extraordinary quality. The first is a painting where Marian iconography is represented, profusely developed in Peruvian Colonial Art. The second element is the altarpiece itself, an architectural structure that has different carved images, which, after their iconographic analysis, it can be deduced that this piece is a private commission due to its originality. Painting of the Virgin of Candelaria In this oil on canvas, later attached to a table, the Virgin of Candelaria appears between two baroque red curtains. In the Viceroyalty of Peru, the iconography of the Virgen del Rosario is the one that has gained the most strength since the 16th century, since her miracles and blessings unite the areas administered from the Castilian Crown. She soon branches out to become the Virgen de la Candelaria, for which she presents herself, in the same way, as the mother of her son whom she carries in her arms, and with a rosary. The Virgin appears hieratic in a single close-up, a syncretic perspective typical of the Andean zone. Other iconography elements are the presence of the moon at its feet, which responds to a tradition from the 15th century for the configuration of the Immaculate Conception, and which here is added as a celestial body in the figure of the dedication of Candelaria. She wears a long, embroidered bell-shaped cloak, which denotes her dignity as Queen. The truncated cone shape originally corresponds to frame images, and in southern Andean iconography, to the identification between Mary and Pachamama. In addition, she wears the imperial crown, an important element in the Cuzco social culture, where the ornament was a distinctive linked to the social power of the dominant classes. It is important to bear in mind that the Baroque had created Marian prototypes of extraordinary realism and beauty in the southern European countries –Italy and Spain mainly. However, in the workshops of the mestizo and indigenous artists who burst into the pictorial and sculptural production of the Peruvian Viceroyalty since the end of the 17th century, literally flooding the market, Maria is stamped with an aesthetic different from the European one. She is a different beauty, with more indigenous features, such as slanted eyes or a dark complexion. Altarpiece The other part that makes up this piece is the architectural structure itself intended to enhance and support the painting. It has a central tympanum where a scene framed by ironwork reminiscent of the Renaissance is represented. In the scene the Virgin is presented with her son embracing a Franciscan, as evidenced by her habit cinched at her waist with an austere rope. Thanks to the presence of this religious, it can be deduced that this piece is a private commission, probably destined for a private chapel, or a Franciscan convent. Above, there is a burst of glory starring God the Father who blesses the entire composition. Finally, one must take into account the impressive Solomonic columns, with a helical shaft, adorned with garlands and very fleshy plant motifs. These ornaments are present throughout the structure, they are in the purest Baroque style. The technique used in the conception of this piece is exceptional, the different elements have been devastated until, in some of them, an almost free round bulge is achieved. Later it has been gilded with fine water-based gold and burnished with agate stone. It comes from an important French collection in Cannes. Total dimensions: 173 x 127 x 17 cm.
