"Knockout, " Dramatic Art Deco Painting of Boxers, Possibly 1936 Olympics

About the Item

This dramatic depiction of two boxers in the ring, with the winning boxer standing over his opponent after a knockout, was painted by Paul Daxhelet in 1936, possibly at the Berlin Olympics. Daxhelet is mostly known for his scenes from Africa in later years, but early in his career he did a series of sports or athletic scenes, including another of several runners, so it seems likely that he witnessed a series of competitive events in Hitler's Berlin. The referee is shown to the right, and a crowd of spectators are shown in the background, adding dramatic energy to the scene. The painting is oil on canvas, and has been given a lovely, heavy, solid walnut frame. Dimensions include the frame; the visible painting itself is 39 inches high by 31 inches wide.
