About the Item
In his early years, artist Ivan Bartlett was known for his WPA mural painting, such as for the Ada County courthouse in Boise, Idaho, but in the 1940s and 1950s he became famous for his fabric design. This original gouache painting typifies his whimsical approach, drawing from the work of Picasso and Dufy, as well as Magritte and other French surrealists. His designs were enormously popular, and were applied to drapery, upholstery and other domestic fabrics, and he influenced the work of other designers and interior decorators. Although he worked in New England and New York, many of his most productive years were spent in California. (Dimensions include frame.)
