Milton Glaser 'Am., 1929 -2020' Sword Swallower, Painting Le Cirque Ny

About the Item

From pasta primavera to world-renowned decadent desserts, Le Cirque's ubiquitous reputation for presenting its fine dining fare with whimsy and fun, landed it on the map of must-dine destinations in New York for glitterati and foodies alike. No matter the location, monkeys and circus themes remained a design staple of the iconic restaurant. Although the landmark restaurant's NYC doors are now closed, We are pleased to offer items from the famed restaurant. Sword Swallower - Large Original Mural on Canvas by the iconic American artist and graphic designer, Milton Glaser. Signed: Milton Glaser lower right #2 on the verso Provenance: Sirio Maccioni via Adam Tihany commissioned 12 original Mural works by Milton Glaser for their Mexico City Restaurant. The paintings were then brought back to New York and hung in Osteria del Circo until its close in 2017. Each painting is signed and they are numbered 1-12 for the series created for Sirio Maccioni and Le Cirque by Glaser. The original proof drawings for the final paintings are archived with The School of Visual Arts in New York City, Condition: A puncture to the lower center of the canvas. Minor tears to the right side of the canvas and in other areas along edges. There is soiling and indentations to the canvas and the frame is in need of repair however the presentation is fantastic. Measures: 113" x 113" x 2"

It was not until the first decade of the 20th century, as artists like Robert Henri and John Sloan turned their attention to the urban scene, that American art shifted its focus from bucolic landscapes to the cities, the towns, the crowds, especially the raucous urban scene of Manhattan, by then the nation's most important city. This movement away from painting the land to painting the life on the street is often seen as a clean break with the depiction of the landscape, and with landscape painting generally as a mainstay of American art in the face of European Modernism. However, artists continued to paint the Hudson River, as well as its tributaries, the Harlem and East rivers, and the great harbor of New York City. What was different was their approach.
