Miniature Hand Painted on Ivory, Bronze Frame, First Third of the 19th

About the Item

A magnificent hand painted miniature on ivory, it is signed by the artist and dates from the first third of the 19th century, enhanced by a very pretty bronze frame bearing the signature on the leg. The term miniature designates a painting of small dimensions generally having a portrait as its subject. First appearing in the 16th century, the miniature enjoyed its golden age in Europe between 1760 and 1840. Until 1750, the work was produced on parchment or vellum prepared and laid out on a plate of copper or wood. Some artists made it on copper and enamel from the end of the 16th century. It was from the 18th century, under Louis XV, that the miniature experienced its greatest development by being produced on a more suitable support similar in color to that of human skin: ivory. This noble material will be the main support of the miniature until 1850. It is not rare to find thin silver or gold leaves called spangles on the back of ivory plates. They are intended to "light up the face". In the 19th century, paper made its appearance as a medium for miniatures. The fragility of the ivory plates requires careful and refined framing For the most part, the miniatures are made in gouache or watercolor. The painter creates the portrait from dotted lines or hatching which must be invisible to the viewer's eye. Small dots of gouache make up the body, watercolor is often reserved for plain, natural or historiated backgrounds. A “goldsmith” work, the miniature requires great know-how and meticulous execution. The invention of photography and its generalization in the second half of the 19th century announced its disappearance. Precise and precious art, its finest examples are now kept in major European museums: the Louvre, Cognacq-Jay, the National Museum in Stockholm, the Wallace collection in London.

Very nice lot of two oils on panel, representing two still lifes. The realism is absolutely remarkable. The first alone represents the elegance and freshness of the Hostess. A magnificent white ceramic bowl sculpted with small harmonious ruffles, composed of red fruits and pears placed on a table where a small garden butterfly still cleverly blends into the decor. The second offers us all the robustness and generosity of the master of the house...
