About the Item

These bucolic scenes of rural living and farm life probably come from German or Austrian painters and are most likely meant to be a pair, circa 1850-1860. The works are very detailed but painted using the qualities of the brush, not the formalized training of a city academically trained artist. In period gilded frames the pair set a nice tone for a small room or on a wall above a small piece of furniture. We have had them slightly cleaned and the frames stabilized but left with the surface we found them retaining. These works quite possibly were sent to this country as export wares for a new nation eager for European art. These were purchased from an early 18th century stone house in Kinderhook NY and used as a decorative element to add charm and grace to its antique colonial setting.
