Rare Pair of Reverse Glass Prints After Claude Gelle Called Le Lorrain C. 1820

About the Item

A RARE PAIR OF REVERSE GLASS PRINTS AFTER CLAUDE GELLE called Le Lorrain (c.1600-1682) Circa 1820. Hand coloured aquatint, published and printed by George Dawe RA (6 February 1781 – 15 October 1829). First, titled “ ITALIAN SEAPORT” 8 1/2" x 10 1/4" in., (21.5 x 26 cm.) Frame, 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" in., (26.7 x 31.8 cm.) Second, titled “ EMBARCATION OF ST. URSULA” 8 1/2" x 10 1/4" in., (21.5 x 26 cm.) Frame, 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" in.,(26.7 x 31.8 cm.) Both, in period birdseye maple veneer frames. Reverse glass print manufacture came into fashion in England at the beginning of the 18th century. Increasing demand for coloured artwork led to this novel production - the reverse glass print. This soon went out of fashion when colour printing was introduced in the mid-19th century.
