Grandioso ritratto della leggendaria Mirra intenta a scappare dal letto una volta scoperta dal padre, realizzato dal maestro Cesare Ghirardi nel 1869.
Il dipinto è datato e firmato in basso a sinistra. E’ stato esposto alla Promotrice di belle arti di Torino
Leggenda di Mirra:
Il re di Cipro Cinira aveva una bellissima figlia chiamata Mirra.
Mirra nutriva una scarsa devozione per la dea Afrodite ed ella per punire la principessa, fece sì che si innamorasse perdutamente di suo padre. Mirra ubriacò e drogò il padre in modo da poter giacere con lui per dodici notti di fila.
La dodicesima notte, la mente del re si schiarì e riconosciuta la figlia si arrabbiò e la inseguì per ucciderla.
Mirra invocò l’aiuto degli dei, ed in suo soccorso intervenne proprio Afrodite che riconobbe di averla sottoposta a una punizione eccessivamente severa e per aiutare la giovane, la tramutò in un albero dalla resina profumata.
Dopo nove mesi il tronco dell’albero si aprì e dalla sua cavità venne alla luce il bellissimo Adone.
Biografia Cesare Ghirardi:
Mondovì (Cuneo) 1841 – Torino 1900
Fu allievo di A. Gastaldi all’Accademia Albertina di Torino. Illustrò soggetti storico-letterari e temi religiosi e fu presente alle esposizioni della Società Promotrice di Torino fra il 1868 e il 1896 (1868, Lucrezia in attesa di Collatino; 1869, Mirra; 1870, La Signora dalle camelie; 1891, Vita signorile; 1894, Una conquista di suor Maria; 1896, Giuda Iscariota). Dipinse anche ritratti e partecipò all’Esposizione Generale di Torino del 1884 con la tela La fanciulla degli Amadei.
Il dipinto è appena stato restaurato ed è in ottime condizioni di conservazione.
