William Keith Original Tonal Oil Painting of California Misty Woodland Landscape

About the Item

Original oil painting on canvas, Tonal-style landscape painting by listed, deceased, famous artist, William Keith (1838-1911). Painting features a group of majestic trees near a pond of water at deep dusk or early dawn. A lone shepherd, seated beneath a tree, watches over his herd of sheep as they make their way down to the water. The tone is relaxed and misty, with softly blurred details and an air of hazy tranquility. William Keith was a Scottish-American painter famous for his plein air California landscapes, characterized by how the landscapes captured feelings and emotions, rather than actual details. He was neither pure Realist nor pure Impressionist. During the 1870s, Keith painted a number of six-by ten-foot panoramas, including "Kings River Canyon" (Oakland Museum, originally owned by Governor Leland Stanford) and "California Alps" (Mission Inn, Riverside). These competed with paintings of similar size and subject matter by famous California landscape painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. Keith is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school of painting. Keith was a great friend of the famous naturalist and explorer, John Muir, who was also born in Scotland and in the same year as Keith. Keith explored the American West, accompanying Muir on several occasions. From the late 1880s on, Keith painted primarily in a subjective vein in which his emotional and spiritual reactions to the landscape were more important than topographical facts. He painted many woodland views that resembled those of Théodore Rousseau and other Barbizon painters, as well as the American painter, George Inness. In 1891, Inness visited the San Francisco Bay Area, and he and Keith painted together, with Keith regaining an enthusiasm for painting that he had begun to lose. Although most of William Keith's painting career was spent in California, he initially immigrated to New York, in 1850, as an engraver. He moved to California in 1859 after visiting California on a trip he made for Harper's Bazaar. in 1858. Keith began exhibiting his paintings in San Francisco in 1864 and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and Berkeley until his death in 1911. He was a prolific painter, having painted over 4,000 paintings in his lifetime. Tragically, thousands of his paintings were lost in the fires following the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, making his paintings all the more collectible. Signed, "W. Keith" in the lower left corner. Elegantly framed in a richly patterned gilt frame with an acanthus leaf inner border. Measures: 29.5 wide x 25.5 high x 2.5 deep (framed). Canvas is estimated to measure 24" wide x 20" deep. Weighs 12 pounds. Pictured with an overhead light. Light not included.

  • Sumptuous Large Original William Foster Still Life Painting of a Banquet Table
    By William Frederick Foster
    Located in Tustin, CA
Sumptuous, very large, original oil on canvas board, still life painting depicting a banquet table. This painting is a virtuoso display of how artist William Frederick Foster (1883-1953) captures texture in paint. You can see this in the mouth watering fruit, crustacea and other samplings laid upon the table as well as the masterfully painted reflective surfaces of the copper tea pot, wine bottle and the gathered table cloth. Painting is framed in the original wood frame. Painting framed measures 34.5” high x 46” wide x 1.5” deep. Painting unframed measures 30.5” high x 42.5” wide. William Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1883. He became a noted figure painter and illustrator, living the last twenty-one years of his career in Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck. His early ambition was to be a violinist, but he was re-focused on fine art when he saw a painting by Albert Ceck Wenzell. In 1902, he went to New York City where he painted scenery for theaters, auditoriums, and large department stores. He also studied at the New York School with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase, and from 1903 to 1931, he worked as an illustrator and with a brief teaching stint in 1919 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1903, he sold his first illustration, a depiction of high society, to Life magazine, and the style was very similar to Wenzell. From that time, he worked for most of the major magazines including Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Monthly. In 1926, he won the National Academy of Design's Thomas B. Clarke Prize for the best figure composition painted in the United States by a non-academician. The following year, he was voted an Associate Member based on his recognition for a figure work titled The Girl in Brown. During World War I, he operated his own ambulance in France as a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps and also received mention as a camoufleur artist. Returning to the U.S., he resumed his illustration work and moved to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute. Foster moved to Los Angeles in 1932 and devoted his energy to painting, exhibiting and teaching. He taught at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and gave private classes in his studio. He also worked on a mural project at the Hearst estate...

  • Large-Scale William Keith Landscape Painting "Harvest"
    By William Keith

Accompanied with period correct Stereograph black and white photograph depicting actual painting in a parlor with handwritten pencil title "Parlor, Berkeley, Cal. '97". This is a museum quality work of art. William Keith (1838-1911) William Keith became in the late 19th and early 20th centuries a leading Northern-California landscape artist. In fact, he was so well known that he is referred to as the "Dean of California painters" and "California's Old Master." Born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Keith came to New York with his family and, apprenticed to a wood engraver. In 1859, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for an engraver and later set up his own engraving business. Studying with Samuel Marsden Brookes in 1863, he determined to become a painter. He married artist Elizabeth Emerson and did watercolor painting with her guidance. In 1868, he became a full-time painter, and that same year was commissioned to paint scenes along the Columbia River including Mount Hood. By August 1869 he had sold enough paintings to finance an extended journey to the East Coast and Europe including Dusseldorf, Germany throughout most of 1870, studying with Albert Flamm. After a visit to Paris, he expressed great admiration for "the modern school of French landscape painting including the Barbizon School. During the winter of 1871-1872, the Keiths lived in Boston where they shared a studio with William Hahn. Keith's work received critical acclaim there and in New York at the National Academy of Design. In 1872, he returned to San Francisco. A friendship with naturalist John Muir exposed Keith to many remote places and in-depth knowledge of nature. During the 1870s, he painted several "epic" eight by ten-foot High Sierra views. He also visited Alaska, and his paintings of Alaska were exhibited upon his return to San Francisco in a show at the Bohemian Club, titled 'Dreams of Alaska'. Keith's Alaska works are significant because they are not close transcriptions of actual scenery, but rather are fantasies inspired by Alaska. They are important as they represent a major break from the documentary tradition in landscape painting of Alaska, as they show an interest in capturing its spirit versus just the topography. In 1891, he shared his studio for several weeks with East Coast Tonalist George Inness, Sr. [1825-1894]. Both men painted in a similar style and were followers of the mystical teachings of Swedenborg. Among the locations where Inness and Keith painted together were Monterey and Yosemite, and it was reported they discussed art from every possible angle. Under Inness' influence, Keith painted more than ever in a Barbizon-influenced vein with many sunset and twilight scenes. Keith’s first wife died in 1882, and in 1883, he married Mary McHenry, the first woman graduate of Hastings Law School. They soon went to Europe, and Keith studied portrait painting in Munich with consultations from J. Frank Currier...
