The visual of the poster was created by Robert McCall, an American artist known for his space paintings and futuristic visions. He worked on numerous space-related projects, including posters for NASA, illustrations for science fiction magazines, as well as artwork for films and television series.
For the promotion of the film, the artist chose to highlight the orbital station from which a Pan American spacecraft, carrying Dr. Heywood R. Floyd, departs. From the orbital station, the doctor prepares for his journey to the moon, visible in the background of the poster. Earth is seen on the left with its oceans.
