1800 Russian Imperial-era Paul I View of the Town of Gatchina Engraving

Vue du Connétable de la ville de Gatchine (View of the Obelisk of Town of Gatchina) circa 1800. After an original by Semion Fedorovich Shchedrin, 1798. Engraving, 13 x 18 in. (33 x 45.8 cm); framed: 19 x 24 in. (48.3 x 61 cm) Singed and inscribed below in Russian and French: Point par S. Chédrine Ad. a Rect. de l'acas. des beaux arts: et gravé par I. Télégine: Vuë du Connétable de la ville de Gatchine prise du pont de pierre. Dédié a sa Majesté Impériale Paul I Empereur et Autocrateur de Touts les Russies. With a Russian Imperial Eagle from the period of Paul I (r 1976-1801) Smion Fedorovich Shchedrin (1745-1804) graduated from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg with a gold medal in 1767. After studying abroad, he returned to his homeland to become a landscape professor at the Academy and painter to the Imperial court of Catherine the Great. In 1799 he took charge of the newly established class of landscape printmaking at the Academy. He continued as a court painter to Emperor Paul I, becoming known for his views of Imperial palaces and parks of Tsarskoe Selo, Gatchina and Pavlovsk. Ivan Dmitrievich Telegine (dates unknown) studied from 1785 to 1800 at the Academy of Fine Arts and was engraver of St. Petersburg palaces and environs.
