Alexander Calder Santa Claus E. E. Cummings Portfolio of Prints and Prose, 1974

About the Item

Portfolio of Alexander Calder Santa Claus prints with text by E. E. Cummings, 1974 Text in English and French Prints 82/175 EE Cummings' most successful play, Santa Claus with nine large folio original etchings by Alexander Calder; each etching signed and numbered by the artist. Cummings' one-act play was first published in the Cummings number of the Harvard Wake in the spring of 1946. The reentry of his daughter Nancy into Cummings' life in 1946, from whom he had been estranged after a bitter divorce, "gave rise to his most successful play, Santa Claus, a Christmas fantasy that represents his belief in the joys of love and giving and his rejection of the materialism and false expectation that he associated with 'science" (Richard S. Kennedy). "The play is an allegory in which Death and Santa Claus exchange masks, but a child sees through the masks to the true identity of each. Death is equated with Science, which 'can sell people anything-except understanding.' In the end, Santa Claus, who is a young man beneath his mask, reveals himself to the child and her mother" Artist: Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) Santa Claus portfolio of 9 by Alexander Calder with text by E. E. Cummings (19.7 x 25.8 in.) English and French The prints are currently framed and mounted in Museum Grade materials.
