Antoine Coypel Engraving "Amor and Psyche" by Jean Audran, 18th Century

About the Item

This beautiful engraving of "Cupido and Psyche" by Jean Audran after a work by Antoine Coypel. Inspired directly by Greek mythology. Psyche is a young human woman with whom Cupid falls madly in love. Unable to be together, Psyche begs Venus to help her but she falls into a deep sleep. The engraving shows the moment when Cupid finds his beloved Psyche asleep and comes to revive her with his arrow. The engraving shows the power of love through a single glance. After these various trials, Psyche is invited to join Olympus and becomes the wife of Amor/Cupidon. Cupido Psychen accurit suam et Suscitat" reads "Cupid comes to the rescue of the beloved Psyche and awakens her". Antoine Coypel was a 17th century French artist. He studied the great masters of the Renaissance and is known for his commissions for Versailles and the royal residences of Marly. In 1716 he created the ceiling of the chapel in Versailles. Jean Audran was an interpretive engraver of the late 17th and early 18th centuries who produced a lot. There are more than a hundred engravings. This engraving was sold in Paris by the dealer and collector Basan in the 18th century. This engraving is also in the British Museum. Sold with the frame: W: 26,3 inch / H: 22,4 inch.
