Byron Randall Original Linocut, 1947, “Diabolical Machine”

About the Item

Original Linocut by San Francisco artist Byron Randall (1918-1999) titled "Diabolical Machine." Image measures: 12 1/2"H x 8 1/4"W. Frame measures: 21 1/2"H x 17"W. This print was created in 1947. It is signed in pencil and dated lower right. It was used in 1948 as an illustration for the pamphlet: Communist Manifesto in Pictures. A copy is in the Auerbach Collection. This print is in excellent condition and archivally framed. The work depicts greedy big business big wigs rolling people through a money printing press. Born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1918, Byron Randall was raised in Salem, Oregon, where he worked as a waiter, harvest hand, boxer, and cook for the Marion County jail to finance his art career. When Randall was 21 years old, a solo show at the Whyte Gallery in Washington D.C. brought his work to national critical attention. That show was followed by others. During the Second World War years, while Randall served in the Merchant Marines, he continued to paint whenever possible. His experiences in the South Pacific influenced his preference for natural forms and bright colors. After the War, he settled in the North Beach area of San Francisco where he ran an art studio and guest house.

  • Original Color Linocut by Werner Büttner "Nachleben" in Yellow and Black
    By Werner Büttner
    Located in Hamburg, DE
Original color linocut by Werner Büttner "Nachleben" in yellow and black. Printed on laid paper and signed and dated in pencil on the right. The paper has some compressions and slight creases, otherwise the condition is good. Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, Büttner moved with his parents from the GDR to Munich. Moved to Berlin in 1968 and studied law at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1973 to 1977. After his studies he worked as a social worker in the Tegel prison. He was a co-founder of several humorously titled organizations such as the "Dum-Dum-Liga-Journal", setting up a seed bank for GDR refugees. In 1976, together with Albert Oehlen, he founded the League to Combat Contradictory Behavior. In the 1980s, together with the brothers Albert and Markus Oehlen and Martin Kippenberger, he was counted among the so-called "newcomers" or "young wild ones" in painting, who turned away from conceptual art and propagated a "return of painting...
