Large color etching and aquatint of New York by Czech/California artist Max Pollak, (1886-1970) This print is titled "New York Battery" and was printed, circa 1927. Image measures: 12 3/8" H x 16 1/8" W. Frame measures: 20 1/4" H x 16 1/8" W. Edition size is 150 of which this print is no. 132. In excellent condition. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1886, Max Pollak achieved a reputation for the skill of his etchings as a young man living in Vienna, Austria. He is perhaps best known for his singular and penetrating portrait of Sigmund Freud (1913), which is widely reproduced. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Art and traveled through Italy, France and Holland, 1910-1914. He emigrated to New York in 1927 but by 1938 he had ended up in California. Pollak exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939 and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1940. He won California Society of Etchers awards in 1942, 1944, and 1945, as well as a Chicago Society of Etchers award in 1942. He continued to travel widely but eventually settled in Sausalito California where he died in 1970.
