Harry Sternberg Pencil Signed Etching, 1931, New York City “Nudes in Landscape"

About the Item

New York and California Artist, Harry Sternberg (1904-2001) Ooriginal etching. Pencil Signed lower right. The edition size is small, only 40, seen lower center on the print. It is unframed, in excellent condition and presents in an 16" H x 20" W 2-ply museum mat. The image measures: 9 7/8" H x 14 7/8" W. The print is Moore no. 75. In 1936 Sternberg was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to create a series of drawings, prints, and paintings showing the principal American Industrial and agricultural occupations. He confined his investigations to the coal and steel industries of eastern Pennsylvania, immersing himself for several months in the lives of the coalminers in Mahanoy City. When he returned to New York, he made a series of eleven prints that emphasized the bleak lives and dangerous work of the miners. Seventh Level, the designation for a certain deep layer of coal within the mines, recalls the numbered circles of the damned in Dante's Inferno. Sternberg wished to point out the dangers of working in the mines - the diseases caused by the inhalation of coal dust, mine collapses, and maiming dynamite accidents that would result in such mutilations. Born in New York City, Harry Sternberg was a painter, muralist, lithographer and educator. During the Depression he was a WPA artist, and his murals are in post offices in Chicago as well as Chester and Sellersville, Pennsylvania. From 1934 to 1968, he taught painting and graphics at the Art Students League in New York, from 1942 to 1945 graphics at the New School of Social Research, and from 1959 to 1969 was head of the Art Department in the Idylwild School of Music and Art at the University of Southern California. He studied at the Art Students League and graphics with Harry Wickey. He wrote several books on graphics including silk screening, etching, and wood cutting.
