18th Century French Aubusson Pastoral Tapestry in the Manner of Boucher

About the Item

Make a statement in your home with this large antique tapestry from France. Handwoven in Aubusson in the style of Boucher, circa 1750, this wall hanging piece depicts a peaceful pastoral scene that includes on the left side, a young shepherd attending his sheep sited next to a young beauty, and a chateau and running stream in the background. The right side shows a courting scene with a gentleman charming a woman playing the pipe, a large dog beside them, and a bridge in the background. The colorful verdure tapestry with trees and foliage, has fresh colors, predominately in the green and beige palette, and will require a large wall to be hung comfortably. The tapestry is in very good condition commensurate with age and use, and has a new canvas backing. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacture in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 127" W x 84" H.

Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
