18th Century French Aubusson Tapestry in Antique Painted Leaf Decor Frame

About the Item

Bring beautiful color to your home with this unique, antique Aubusson tapestry. Woven in France, circa 1760, the elegant tapestry features a young woman holding a torch with verdure and foliage surrounding her. The tapestry is set inside an old carved frame with hand painted green leaves. The wall hanging piece is in good condition, commensurate with age and use, and would make a charming addition to a bedroom or hallway. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a centre of tapestry manufacture in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV; Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 69.5" W x 2.5" D x 28" H.
