"Peace, " Monumental Art Deco Tapestry w/ Goddess of Abundance and Nudes, 1945

About the Item

A unique and remarkable work of art with great historical importance, this monumental Art Deco tapestry celebrating the end of World War II presents a large scene of nude male and female figures in brilliant colors symbolizing rebirth and abundance. Designed by Gaston Alfred Henrich and woven by the famous Aubusson tapestry works in 1945, it is populated with an array of idealized nude figures representing trade and agriculture -- some are carrying sheaves of wheat and jars of oil, one worker is holding a scythe, and a boat is resting on the water nearby. Arching over the entire scene is a gigantic rainbow. The scene is vivid with rich colors -- olive green, golden yellow, burnt sienna and deep blue -- and the border is laden with grape clusters in tones of red and purple. Altogether, the scene represented hope and optimism to a nation grappling with poverty and ruin.
