"Aphrodite, " Masterful Marble Bas Relief Rondel by Flanagan, Sculptor for Mint

About the Item

Created by one of the great masters of bas relief sculpture in America, John Flanagan, this profile depiction of the goddess Aphrodite was used as the model for the famous "Aphrodite/Swift Runners" bronze medal issued in 1932 by the Society of Medalists. Carved from a slab of gorgeous white marble, the details are extremely fine, and in low relief: Aphrodite's likeness is lovely and her hair is gathered in the ancient Greek manner, her right hand languorously touching her neck. (In the bronze medal, her hand is shown holding a pearl necklace.) Flanagan served as the studio assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens for several years, and a portrait bust of Saint-Gaudens by Flanagan is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Flanagan is perhaps best known as the sculptor of the US Quarter, featuring George Washington and an eagle, and he also sculpted the great bronze clock in the reading room of the Library of Congress. An original sculpture like this by Flanagan is extremely rare.

  • "Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine
    By Jules-Edouard Roiné 1
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt...
