Carved Marble Fu Dog Panels

About the Item

This set of exquisitely-carved marble garden plaques features two fu dogs playing with ribbons. The female fu dog (or fu lion) guards her pup while the male toys with a ball, which represents the world. The plaques have a joyful energy that lightens the mood of any space. Fu dogs were believed to guard against evil spirits and were often placed near the entrances to mansions and gardens. Fu dogs could be dog-like (similar to a Shar-Pei) or lion-like with prominent claws, mane and fluffy tail. These panels were recently carved from very white, pure Hebei marble. Traditionally, carvings like this would have been embedded in the walls flanking the entrance to a building. They can now be mounted on stands or displayed outdoors on a plinth.
