Italian 1930s Painted and Gilt Terracotta Medallion Depicting a Horse's Head

About the Item

An Italian painted and gilt terracotta medallion from the early 20th century depicting a horse's head seen in profile. Created in Italy during the second quarter of the 20th century, this terracotta medallion captures our attention with its lovely depiction of a horse's head represented in profile. Carved in high-relief, the horse exudes energy and life. The artists demonstrated great finesse in his treatment of the details, particularly visible in the eyes and muscles. The mane around his head, made of scrolling locks, is flowing freely in a manner suggesting movement. The ensemble has been painted in white with lots of natural terracotta coming through, and has been accented with traces of gilt. With its nicely weathered appearance, great subject and lovely proportions, this Italian high-relief terracotta horse head circ 1930 will make for a great decorative addition to any home, particularly hung above a side table, commode or buffet.
