Mid-20th Century Black Dance Mask, Guerrero, Mexico

About the Item

Mid-20th century black dance mask, Guerrero, Mexico A nice old mask from Guererro, Mexico, used in the Tlacololero Dance of the Tlactapa and probably from the 1950s, has a very modern, graphic feel to it. The nose has suffered a bit from a fall and has some old touch-up paint. The red painted circular mouth echoes the shape of the white incised circles of the eyes, which are carved just below the holes through which the dancer would peer. The nose appears to have been constructed by adding a triangular piece of wood to the carved nose, but this was done when the piece was created, as this is the typical profile for this character in the dance. The dimensions are 8” x 6.25” x 7.5” deep (20.3 x 16 x 19 cm). Comes with a custom mounting bracket.
