About the Item

Artist: Robert Indiana (1928-2018) Title: Indiana Elliot (Sheehan 99) Year: 1977 Medium: Silkscreen on Arches rag paper Edition: 57/150, plus proofs Size: 24 x 20 inches Condition: Good Inscription: Signed and numbered by the artist. Notes: Published by Leon Amiel; printed by Fernand Mourlot, Paris. Starting in 1965, Indiana collaborated with composer Virgil Thompson to design the sets and costumes for Gertrude Stein's 1947 opera "Mother of us All." Based on the life of Susan B. Anthony, who was one of the most famous proponents of women's suffrage in the U.S., the opera was presented as part of a Bicentennial celebration in 1976 by the Santa Fe Opera. Indiana made over 200 paper collages of his costumes and set designs. Some of those collages were on view at the Whitney Museum of Art at the 2013-2014 Robert Indiana retrospective. This artwork is one of the 13 graphic artworks in the portfolio. ROBERT INDIANA (1928-2018) Indiana's work has evolved into hard-edged graphic images of words, logos and typographic forms, earning him a reputation as one of the country's leading contemporary artists. He is known for using public signs and symbols with altered lettering to make stark and challenging visual statements. In his paintings and constructions he has given new meaning to such basic words as "Eat", "Die" and "Love." Using them in bold block letters in vivid colors, he has enticed his viewers to look at the commonplace from a new perspective. One indication of his success was the appearance of his immensely popular multi-colored "Love" on a United States postage stamp in 1973.

    By Hebru Brantley
    Located in Asheville, NC
“3 THE HARD WAY portrays the concept of standing together to fight a system of racism and violence against the Black community — because we are stronger together,” explained Brantley. “I was thinking about building a community, building that totem, stacking one on top of another to reach somewhere closer to where we need to be. I’ve been exploring the language of totems and like the idea that you can combine different ideologies and tie them together in one narrative. Through 3 THE HARD WAY what I’m creating is one very concise theme, of brotherhood and building. Ultimately, the works highlight themes of race and power, but also hope.” Artists: Brantley, Hebru Manufacturer: Avant Arte...
