About the Item
Leitão & Irmão Portuguese crown jewelers antique late 19th century diamond star brooch and convertible tortoise shell hair piece in silver and yellow gold, Portugal, circa 1880. This highly collectible Victorian jewel is composed by an old-cut diamond-set star mounted in silver-on-gold which is mounted onto a two-leg tortoise shell hair comb displaying the coveted mottled brown and tan color, rare in its immaculate condition. The 10-ray star can be detached and worn independently as a brooch or pendant; it is cut-down collet-set throughout with Old Mine-cut and Old European brilliant-cut diamonds, the central stone of a larger size and warmer color. Main diamond: Old Mine-cut; estimated 2.90 carats (approximately 8.33 x 8.33 x 6.59 mm); L/M color (assessed); SI1 clarity (assessed). Other diamonds: Old Mine-cut and Old European brilliant-cut; estimated 3.0 carats in total. Partial maker’s mark “L” attributed to Portuguese crown jeweler Leitão & Irmão (reg. 1887). Partial hallmark, possibly “tiger II” (used 1887-1937) for 19.2kt (800/1,000) gold. Dimensions: 4.1 cm. Gross weight: 10.45g (as a brooch); 12.25g (as a hair piece).
