Tiffany & Co. France Gold Knot Brooch

About the Item

Made in the 1960s, this gold knot brooch was created by Tiffany & Co. Composed of a double strand of gold rope twist, the brooch is designed as a square knot motif of eight crossings. A classic Tiffany & Co. form of the 1960s, this classic bold brooch of fine French workmanship pairs stylishly with a tweed or bouclé jacket by Chanel or your favorite couturier. Item #: BO-20068 Artist: Tiffany & Co. Country: France Circa: 1960s Size: 1.5” diameter Materials: 18K Gold Signed: “Tiffany & Co. France" This ingenious square knot, a mainstay of sailors, ties two ropes together securely, with the added benefit that it is easy to untie. Throughout its history, Tiffany has drawn from nautical design for its jewels and decorative objects to please the yachting and sailing enthusiasts among its clientele, as well as those who love the mathematical and geometric abstractions offered by knot motifs.

Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances, building on the enormous base of precise observations provided to them by their predecessors in the 1700s. Using the new technique of spectroscopy, they worked to determine the composition of heavenly bodies, while breakthroughs in understanding the geology of the earth -many made by passionate amateur scientists as diverse as surveyors and Anglican clergy - helped them discover the facts about the nature of the moon and newly discovered planets. It was in fact an Anglican priest who first advanced his well-supported theory that the earth was indeed more than a billion years old. Astonishing early imaging of the moon, as well as the appearance of the Great Comets of 1843 and 1882 that remained for months burning in the sky above England, helped stoke popular fascination with heavenly bodies.
