Victorian Diamond Double Serpent Brooch
About the Item
A Victorian diamond double serpent brooch, the central old European-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.55 carat, surrounded by two entwinned serpents curled in a figure-of-eight design, the bodies and snouts encrusted with old brilliant-cut diamonds weighing approximately 2 carats, the eyes set with cabochon rubies, all set in silver to yellow gold back and gold brooch fitting, circa 1880, measuring approximately 1.2x4cm, gross weight 5.18 grams.
This antique brooch is in excellent condition. Unmarked, tested as 14ct gold and silver, with 9ct gold pin.
A dazzling and elegant late nineteenth century brooch. This brooch takes the form of two serpents, each sinuously curved over a central old-cut diamond. The intertwined serpents are set with further scintillating diamonds, and the eyes of the creatures are set with glinting cabochon-cut rubies. The stones are set to bright silver and a yellow gold back. During the Victorian era, serpent jewellery had several symbolic meanings, but the strongest association was with fidelity and everlasting love. This gorgeous piece comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
