Unusual 15 Karat Plaited Hair Double Sided Cufflinks, circa 1860

About the Item

Hair jewelry, or more specifically, the art of setting hair in beautiful arrangements as sentimental jewelry, dates from the Georgian era. Its popularity was at its zenith in the 19th century. The Victorians (with the help of their queen, who was never without jewelry containing a lock of Albert's hair) were fascinated by hair jewelry. Plaited hair jewelry was popular in the United States, France and England. Difficult to master, people would usually commission firms to the task of making of jewelry out of their hair. These cufflinks were likely commissioned by a wife who wanted her husband to have a pair of cufflinks made from her hair to be worn as a sentimental love token. The cufflinks are ½ inch at the widest, 3/4 inch long and in perfect condition. More information can be found in "Cufflinks" by Susan Jonas and Marilyn Nissenson.
