About the Item

An incredible necklace from the Arts & Crafts (1910s) era! Crafted in sterling silver, this gorgeous piece was created by Arthur and Georgie Gaskin, a husband and wife team who pioneered within the Arts & Crafts movement in Birmingham, England. Georgie created all of their original designs, and together, she and Arthur worked to bring them to life. This unique necklace features two dramatic links, one displaying a marquise-shaped mother of pearl plaque and the other a heart-shaped mother of pearl, each resting in a collet setting with a braided rope frame. Swirls of open sterling silver wirework create a lush foliate motif around each pearl and various cuts of pink tourmaline and emerald French paste stones are set throughout the flowing design. Seven natural seed pearls further decorate the elaborate wirework and a final fresh water pearl dangles from the very bottom, topped in a decorative silver cap. The pink tourmaline and emerald paste display intense, vibrant hues, perfectly complementing the leafy design and enhancing the rainbow iridescent sheen of the mother of pearl. Two draped layers of silver chain attach at either side of the central centerpiece pendant, embellished with two wirework links reminiscent of a Celtic knot. A single chain fastens at a secure spring ring clasp in the back, completing the stunning design. The important necklace was once featured at the Tadema Gallery in London and comes in its custom-made box. This museum-quality piece would be a phenomenal addition to any Arts & Crafts collection. The necklace measures approximately 17 1/4" in total length. The top pendant measures approximately 1 1/2" wide and 1" tall. The lower heart-shaped pendant is about 1" wide by 1" tall. The overall pendant drop length is about 2 1/2" inches.

Repaired: There is evidence of an earlier chain repair next to the clasp but this does not affect the integrity of the piece. Wear consistent with age and use. No apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. Chain and clasp are secure. The pink tourmaline, emerald paste, mother of pearl and pearls are all intact and securely set. There is a natural patina on the sterling silver. The box is pristine.
