Contemporary Diamond Festoon Collar Necklace

About the Item

The defining flourish of a festoon necklace is the drama of its swag, opulently undulating and accenting the collarbones in radiant sparkle. Festooning has been used since ancient times, with the most recent celebratory example adorning the city of London at the Coronation of King Charles. In classical Greek and Roman architecture, the festoon was a garland of ribbons, flowers, fruit, or foliage draped between two supports, used as decoration and, at times, the symbol of saintliness, glory, or victory. These garlands were also worn on the body--on the head or around the neck to signify honor or celebration, and this tradition was carried forward to the Classical period, the Renaissance, and through to Victorian England, especially as a recurrent motif in paintings and sculpture. The festoon is also a type of necklace that contains several drapes or swags of gemstones, chains, and other sculptural elements as the critical elements of the design. The style became popular during the Georgian period (1714–1830s), carrying over into the Victorian era (1837–1901), and has been revived with many sparkling all-diamond looks over the years, from the Edwardian period to the Mid-Century. The luxury of this Contemporary Diamond Festoon Collar Necklace, made in the 21st century, harkens back throughout the ages, borrowing details from along the way. The stunning and streamlined piece is crafted in platinum, set with mixed cut diamonds with an estimated weight of 10.01 carats total, and features over a dozen swags or festoons of sparkling stones. The festoons are graduated demi-curves, set with graduated round diamond pavé and portray a precision that references the Machine Age. One curve is interlaced directly into the next—as if hinged and moveable—with a mechanism on each back that suggests convertibility. The abstract and linear festoons are accented with ten bezel-set fancy-cut triangular diamonds, suggesting the dynamism of an arrow in an Ancient Roman design. The swags drape from a minimalist, single line of round diamonds that, at first glance, appear of all the same size but flow around the neck with near imperceptible and highly skilled graduation towards the concealed push clasp in the back. Each round diamond is pavé-set in an individual box setting, which makes the diamonds look square from afar. The look and construction of the inner chain of the necklace borrow directly from the simple but richly elegant diamond line necklace popular in the Art Deco period, which portrays a streamlined articulated row. When setting stones in Art Deco jewelry of the 1920s and 1930s, a trompe l’oeil convention was popularly used as an effective optical illusion to make diamonds look larger or make rounds look square. In this piece, the latter effect is achieved. This festoon collar necklace is a sparkling treasure for Art Deco enthusiasts and fans of minimalist precision alike. It is truly a celebratory piece imbued with the history of the ages. Total diamond weight approx. 10.01 carats. Overall weight approx. 40.01 grams, made in platinum, 15" (38 cm) long. Circa 21st Century.
