About the Item

Founded in 1810 by French silversmith Isaac Marquand, who immigrated to the United States, Black, Starr & Frost is the oldest continually operating jewelry store in the U.S. The firm’s name changed to Ball, Tompkins & Black, and was one of a few American jewelers invited to exhibit in the London Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in 1851. Partnerships and names changed many times until Robert C. Black, Cortland W. Starr and Aaron Vail Frost reimagined the operation under the name Black, Starr & Frost in 1876. World-renowned for its finely crafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry and watches, Black, Starr & Frost has catered over the centuries to legendary clients such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Guggenheims, the Prince of Windsor, and various Hollywood movie stars. Currently headquartered in Newport Beach, CA, with a second showroom in Phoenix, the company is now owned by the Molina Group, headed by an 11th generation jewelry maker, Alfredo J. Molina. In French, fleur-de-lys means "lily flower." Decorative ornaments that resemble the fleur-de-lys have appeared in artwork from the earliest human civilizations. It has consistently been used as a royal emblem, though different cultures have interpreted its meaning in various ways. An exquisite natural yellow sapphire pendant from the Edwardian (ca1910) era by legendary designers Black, Starr & Frost! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold and platinum, this piece holds a natural sapphire, which weighs approximately 14.50ct and hangs from a fleur-de-lys shaped topper. The Modified Brilliant Cut gemstone is of Sri Lankan origin, and is beautifully shaped into a romantic heart. The sapphire exhibits a luscious yellow hue, which has no indications of heat treatment. Surrounding the stone is a vibrant gold frame featuring decorative prongs, a delicate rope border, and a lovely scalloped wirework edge on the back. The diamond encrusted fleur-de-lys topper allows the piece to dangle with lovely movement and catch the light beautifully with every turn. The Rose Cut diamonds rest in a platinum setting, creating a wonderful mixed metals appeal! Finishing the design is a hidden bail at the back, stamped with the Black, Starr & Frost hallmark "B S & F" beside a "14K" purity mark. Accompanying the pendant is a Gemological Sapphire Origin Report issued by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in February 2019, which provides further details about the piece. A truly magnificent pendant, it is positively breathtaking in person, and would look incredible worn on special occasions! The pendant hangs slightly more than 1" long, and measures about 5/8" wide, and is 3/8" thick.

Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and platinum setting. The sapphire and diamonds are all intact and securely set. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
